* LAND

* TRAIN:
Twice daily trains connect Mombasa with Nairobi. The train is an excellent experience, reminiscent of the colonial days. There are also trains to Kisumu, Malaba, Nanyuki, Eldoret, Voi, Taveta, Kitale.

* BUS:
If you can stand the pace and the avant garde driving style, buses are frequent and cheap, connecting all parts of the country using Nairobi as a hub.

* MATATU
African style shared taxi or minibus or pick-up. Cheap and colourful servicing many city destinations as well as outlying routes.

* TAXI
Taxis are quite cheap and plentiful in Nairobi, Mombasa and other cities. Many are decrepit but there are also dozens of London 'black cab' taxis operating. Always agree the fare before starting the journey.

* CAR RENTAL

+ Driving: On the left as in the UK, Australia, Japan etc. Outlying roads are often in poor condition. Roads in the game parks are unsealed. Car rental companies do not normally allow ordinary saloon/sedan cars on unsealed roads but 4 wheel drives are permitted.

+ Car Rental: Available in Nairobi, Mombasa, Malindi and at any coastal hotel. You can drive yourself or take a driver with you for a little extra cost. Car hire is relatively expensive. Some of the cars available are of poor quality.

From Mombasa, Malindi and Lamu you can take an Arab style dhow along the coast - unless specifically operated for tourists, there are no facilities on the dhows but it is a marvellous experience.
Deep sea fishing boats and dive boats (including live aboard boats) operate from many of the hotels and resorts along the Indian Ocean Coast.
Bicycle: Bikes can be hired in Nairobi. Some tour operators offer mountain bike tours.
