Macushla House

Macushla is a less expensive but still very good, intimate private house in the Karen region to the south west of Nairobi. Simple and quirky are probably words that best describe the house, with great service and good rooms sizes, it is a popular choice.

The concept for Macushla has sprung out of the Gaelic word for “my beloved” and reflects this thought throughout both the communal area and the rooms.

With the owners living on site, the hotel still maintains a very personal feel to it and, with some very good food being served daily, the house has a very personal and intimate feel to it.

As with a few of the other properties in Karen, the house has views out to the famous Ngong Hills, made famous by the areas namesake, Karen Blixen.

The rooms all feature a different attribute or focus with some being vast, and others being cozy. The main area too, and the grounds around which can be seen the various pieces of art and sculpture that the owners have collected on their extensive travels, also have this air of being well cared for.

Macushla House – Our view

Similar to its neighbours in the Karen area, this hotel benfits from being closely located near the main attractions such as the Giraffe Centre and the Karen Blixen Museum, which relates the escapades of this famous author. The hotel itself can not boast the luxuries of its main rivals such as the House of Waine, but, at around a hundred dollars less a night, we don’t think it should. All in all, if you are looking for a hotel that has no pretentions and has a unique feel to it, then Macushla certainly won’t disappoint.
