The Laikipia Plateau
The plateau stretches north from the Abadare Mountain Range to the start of the Samburu tribal lands in the shadow of the Mathews Range and is, in essence, the sum of what was once predominantly cattle ranches. Today, however, with the steady rise of safari prices and increased concern for endangered species, the land has now become more profitable as reserved land and the Plateau boasts game second only to the Masai Mara in its abundance.
The Lewa Conservancy
The most famous region is undoubtedly the Lewa Conservancy, which was established in the early 80’s by the Craig/Douglas family as a black rhino sanctuary. Today they have a variety of rare species ranging from the Grevy’s zebra to Sitatunga and oryx. From Lewa the rolling red hills spread north with long ranging vistas as far as the eye can see. Each of the ranches, from Borana in the south to Loisaba, Sabuk and Ol Malo in the north offers a wide range of safari experience with camels, horse riding, helicopters and normal 4x4’s on offer in all.
