We are very excited to announce that Ol Donyo Wuas was the joint winner of the Eco-warrior Award on March 22nd, 2007 in Nairobi, Kenya. Ecotourism Kenya launched the Eco-warrior Award in 2005.
Ol Donyo Wuas is situated on the Mbiriakani Group Ranch at the base of the Chyulu Hills and is most probably the first eco-lodge in Kenya based on community land having been started in 1984. From the outset, Ol Donyo Wuas gained a reputation of working very closely with the community.
This led to the formation of the Masailand Preservation Trust to receive and administer donations from clients staying at Ol Donyo Wuas, for community projects, including:
Educational projects such as building schools, providing educational scholarships and paying teachers salaries
Conservation projects such as re-forestation to address land degradation and employing Community Game Scouts to provide security to river systems and wildlife
A Predator Compensation Scheme which pays group ranch members for any livestock killed by predators
A Health Care facility providing free health care to group ranch members
These and other worthy projects undertaken by Ol Donyo Wuas and the Trust led to them winning the 2006 Eco-warrior Award.
The Eco- warrior award provides Ecotourism Kenya with an opportunity to recognize and reward innovations in sustainable tourism while supplying information on best practices. Among the values emphasized by the award are innovations that respect the environment, respect local people and cultures, impacts on local economies and empower local communities, practice of ecotourism, provide opportunities for linkages with local communities and promote good environmental governance. The winners must demonstrate innovation in any one or more of these areas
